The SR 299/Main Street project made corridor-wide improvements along approximately two miles of roadway through Middletown, between SR 1 and Catherine Street. The project addressed traffic operations, pedestrian access, drainage, utilities, transit stops, and intersection upgrades along a busy corridor serving downtown Middletown, nearby neighborhoods, local businesses, and regional traffic. Improvements included rebuilding or upgrading eight traffic signals, adding ADA-compliant sidewalk and curb ramp connections, improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities, upgrading signing and pavement markings, improving drainage and water quality facilities, and adding six DART bus stops along the corridor. The project was also recognized nationally through the 2025 America’s Transportation Awards program, where it advanced as one of the Top 12 finalists and won the People’s Choice Award.

Join transportation professionals and ITE members on May 20 for a guided tour of the SR 299/Main Street project corridor in Middletown. The tour will begin and end at Volunteer Brewing Company on Main Street. Participants will travel the corridor by DART bus and stop at several key locations to discuss project challenges, design features, multimodal improvements, traffic operations, construction considerations, and lessons learned from delivering a major corridor improvement project in a growing downtown community.

The bus tour is limited to 20 participants, but all are welcome to join the happy hour afterward at Volunteer Brewing Company. The post-tour gathering will include drink 2 tickets, street tacos, networking, and the opportunity to take professional headshots.
