Summary

This in-person, instructor-led course, held June 3–4, introduces the use of Synchro signal timing software for capacity analysis of signalized intersections, along with the SimTraffic microscopic simulation model. The instruction blends lecture with hands-on exercises and covers topics such as individual intersection analysis, network analysis and optimization, advanced timing applications, use of the Universal Traffic Data Format (UTDF), underlying optimization methods, and relevant local examples.

 

Target Audience

This course is intended for participants who already have a working knowledge of Synchro and have version 11 or 12 installed on a laptop. Attendees should be able to create a basic network and input fundamental lane, volume, and timing data.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  •         Understand special coding rules for entering lanes, volume, and timing data.
  •         Optimize cycle length, splits, and offsets for individual intersections.
  •         Optimize signal networks for cycle length and offsets.
  •         View and modify Synchro time–space diagrams.
  •         Interpret and evaluate output results.
  •         Integrate Synchro models with SimTraffic.
  •         Generate reports presenting timing parameters and measures of effectiveness.
  •         Understand the fundamental calculations used by Synchro to better interpret outputs.
  •         Explain how optimization processes are performed.
  •         Utilize advanced features such as UTDF and file merging.
  •         Develop solutions for complex or unique coding scenarios.
  •         Apply practical workarounds when needed.

 

Prerequisites

You must be a current user or have access to Synchro software installed on a laptop that you can bring to the training. Attendees should have a solid understanding of signal timing concepts, including terms such as phase, offset, cycle, split, and offset reference. A pre-class assignment will be sent in advance to review key signal timing fundamentals.

Day 2 – JUNE 4, 2026 – Analysis, Optimization, Simulation & UTDF

  • 8:00 AM – Intersection Analysis
    Measures of effectiveness and performance evaluation
  • 8:15 AM – Intersection Optimization
    Local optimization methods and objectives
  • 10:00 AM – Network Analysis & Optimization
    Network overview, partitioning, cycle length, and offset optimization

  • 12:30 PM – Time-Space Diagrams (TSD)
    Working with Synchro’s TSD tools
  • 1:00 PM – Program Reports
    Generating reports and exporting data
